- <p> DIED. Vincent Gardenia, 70, actor; of a heart attack; in
- Philadelphia. Gardenia died an actor's death--in a hotel room
- on tour. And he lived an actor's life, blending the passion of
- Italian opera with the patois of Brooklyn's streets in 50 years
- of stage and screen triumphs, including a Tony Award-winning
- turn in Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1971) and
- Oscar-nominated appearances that cemented his relationship with
- moviegoers and casting directors alike: the hard-edged baseball
- manager in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) and the softhearted
- philanderer in Moonstruck (1987).
